I’m Totally Hooked

Look what I made!! I documented the whole process since a few of you asked me to. Click the picture to see what I did for a mini, self-striping yarn dying tutorial.

SuperBoy

I’m going to Lowe’s today to see how I can make my own board. I want to be able to do up to 6 colors so I want it to be twice the size of this one I borrowed. As you can see, it went a lot smoother this time. There was no mess at all and I even did it inside. I’m such a wild and crazy gal. Thank you again Cookie (Yes, that would be Pomatomus Cookie) for the dyes. All three of these colors came from what you sent me!

Supergirl named the yarn Superboy. He can’t wait for me to make socks with it. The colors are Lemon Yellow, Turquoise & Black Cherry. Now that I get how the warping board works, thanks to Adrian of Hello Yarn, I’m not scared to do my next skein of sock yarn for me. This yarn I used was Lanett yarn by Sandnes and was only 195 yards. My next project is to dye some Fortissima Socka for myself. There is 458 yards so I’ll be prepared for it to take twice as long to wind. It’s okay, I actually liked doing it as strange as that may sound.

If anyone has questions shoot. Obviously I’m just a beginner but I think I have it down pretty well. I can’t wait to start mixing up the dyes. If you’re a mathematical type who likes stripey yarn this is definitely the project for you.

Wow, that was a fantastic photo essay on the process you used. I still can’t believe you are using a foam brush. How did you “set” the colors? Did you steam? Such coolness all in one post!

Yay! I’m glad it turned out well. I’d been having fears that the dye would explode or do something bad to you and it would all be my fault. Can’t wait to see what your next batch looks like!

Nice job! Now that I have seen your project, I think I get what you meant about removable pegs. When I made my warping board, I drilled holes in the board and cut up a down into 4-inch length (roughly) and glued them in place. I see that your board has a slightly different method of winding than mine, yours being easier to keep from tangling, I think. But I like mine too.

(I am trying to edit my above comment, but I can’t see it because of your blogroll in front of the text. Anyway, I meant to say that the wooden dowels are smooth so the yarn doesn’t catch on them and also, when I put the finiished skein back on the warping board, I do it kind of loosely and don’t use all the pegs if I don’t want to.)

I agree that the color thing is totally addictive! I’m just sorry that you won’t be needing me for your purple stripe fix anymore. :-)

I am posting a tutorial on my own blog tomorrow so you can see how our methods are similar and different. I didn’t get any “in process” photos like you did, so I’ll have to tell people that I use squeeze bottles instead of brushes to work the dye.

    Have fun!

I love your yarns. You are wonderful at picking the color schemes. I have alot of natural wool to dye, and have
had it for a long time. I have not gotten brave enough to dye yet. Now that I have seen your tutorial, I think
that I will be brave enough to try it. I would love it if you could give me directions on making a warping board
I have been wanting to make one but did not know how. I am so excited to make one and get started dyeing
    some great sock yarn.
    Thanks again
