Scout’s Ghetto Warping Board Instructions!

Sorry it too me so long to post the warping board instructions but I escaped out of town yesterday for a quick little mama-get-away up to Santa Fe with Carole and Mona. We really had fun and you can read all about it on Carole’s blog if you want. My most favorite part of the trip was the cool onyx ring and pink Scala hat I got at the Tesuque Pueblo Flea Market. (Okay, drinking my famous cosmos, hanging out with my girls and eating yummy cheese and bread and knitting wasn’t too bad either!) Stylin’ huh?

cowgirls

Needless to say, we had a fantastic time. Anytime mamas can have 24 hours sans kids? Yeah. Fun stuff.

Let’s get down to the real reason of this post. How can you make a warping board to make beautiful, self-striping yarn like this?

Scout’s Tarzhay - self striping yarn

Tarzhay

Go get a pen & paper. And here we go.

Scout’s Ghetto Warping Board

Materials:

wooden board - 11″x30″x1″ I used Poplar - you just want a hard wood
7/16 woodboring bit
3/16 drill bit
2 - 3/16 steel plate round - 3 feet metal rod
# 8 washers
bottle of Gorilla Glue
hacksaw or something to cut the metal rods
metal file to file down the cut metal rods
some sort of varnish/poly to coat the wood once done

I simply asked the nice man at Lowe’s to cut the board for me. Then, follow the diagram below to mark the board for the pegs. (click for the bigger image)

ghetto board

Obviously I’m not a carpenter. If this doesn’t make sense please let me know. Once you have measured & marked the holes with a pencil, using the woodboring bit, go ahead and drill all of the holes. (When yarn is dyed it shrinks and that’s why the one side has two holes. You wind the white yarn on the outside holes and once it’s dyed & dried you put it back on the inside ones.)

After using the woodboring drill-bit, I then took the 3/16th bit to make the hole a bit deeper for the metal rods to be able to go in deeper. Be carfeul not to go too deep and keep it straight while you drill!

Get out the gorilla glue and make sure to use rubber gloves as to not get that on your skin. I was warned it is crazy-strong glue. Dab a little bit of glue on the flat side of the washer and insert into each hole. It should then look like this.

board

I then applied a clear varnish coating to seal the wood.

The next step is probably the hardest part of the whole process. You need to cut the metal rods into 5″ pieces. Once you have cut them, use the metal file to round the edges so they are smooth and won’t catch on the yarn.

And then? That’s it! Then you can go ahead and warp your board to dye up to six colors. Obviously you can do as many colors as you want. Here are a few pictures of the last skein I dyed.

Give me a bit to write out the instructions of how to actually wind the board. That’s a bit tricky and I need to figure out how to draw it out. I really hope these instructions make sense. Let me know okay!? I think I need a nap now….

You guys look fabulous! Love the hats. And the yarn looks so frickin’ good wound up. No really, so frickin’ good!

How do you cut the rods for the board? Did you do that yourself,or do you get the Home Depot guys to do it for you?

woohooo! This looks much better than what we did for our Kool Aid dyeing this weekend. Which was basically laying the skeins on a table and squirtgunning it. Fun, but not quite precise. :P

Too bad you can’t make a little video to show how to put
the yarn on the board. It would really be the best way to
explain the process. It would be Scout’s “Knitting Help” video

Ok, you gotta tell a dingdong newbie like me - what’s a warping board for? Is it so you don’t have to wind the yarn into a hank that is 12 feet long in order to separate it?

I think I’ll be dyeing some yarn this weekend…just for kicks…

Little confused in the supplies… is the “2 - 3/16 steel plate round” just the proper name we need to ask for at the hardware store for the metal rods???

That isn’t ghetto! Making it out of a board found in a vacant lot and metal pulled from a neighbor’s car is ghetto. Yours is as nice as the original!

You’ve got to get knitting this stuff so we can see how the stripes look at the particular gauge/length of stripe and stuff.

I’m making a warping board and I guess I’m missing something. Could you tell me how far apart the row of single pegs is from tyhe row of double pegs. I see that the rows are 2inches and it looks like the double pegs are going to be about an inch apart but I’m missing the long deminsion.
Thank you so much for posting these instructions. My house is way to small to try the chair technique. I joined
Dye o rama so I’m trying to get this put together so I can play.

I finished by board. I’m so excited ! After you answered my stupid question
it became totally obvious what the measurements were and it was really easy
to make. Your directions were great. I’ll post a pict on my blog after I
recharge the camera. Now I need to know how to wind the yarn though.
I have a guess but I’m not sure if I’m right. Do you think you could sketch out
a diagram maybe with arrows? Otherwise I could sketch out my guess and post it on my blog
then you could tell me how far off I am.
also I lOOOOVEEE the new green yarn.

    Scout,

How do you wind the darned thing? Or rather, how do you wind it so all of the sections have the same amount of yarn. I just can’t figure it out. It seems like the middle sections would always have more yarn in them than the end sections, and I want them to be the same.

    Thanks!

Paris Hilton had sex with her new boyfriend in a portable toilet, it has been claimed.

The hotel heiress is alleged to have got hot and steamy with new lover Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos in the unlikely love den at an exclusive Hollywood party.

According to reports, the pair spent the evening kissing and groping each other before sneaking into one of the loos to get frisky.

Meanwhile, Paris was reportedly overheard fuming into her mobile phone “she’s a jealous, ugly, anorexic idiot” - sparking rumours over which one of her celebrity enemies she was describing.

The sexy star, who recently split from fiance Paris Latsis, was reportedly heard spouting the torrent of insults as she got out of a limousine in New York last week.

Speculation is now rife Paris could have been talking about either teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen or former best friend, and ‘Simple Life’ co-star, Nicole Richie.

[...] Knitting updates: I finished one Jaywalker sock and completed the front half of the Fitted Tank…but I took a break from that to make a warping board. So, out came the power tools, a quick trip to Home Depot, sweat and sore fingers…and I made this! Thanks to Scoutj’s (Dyeing Super mama) instructions.
