Supergirl wore a leotard today for her new gymnastics class. This is a huuuuuge deal for those of you who don’t know her. Supergirl doesn’t do girly stuff. Ever. She insists that every pair of shorts go past her knee like her brother and all of the cool boys. She’ll totally wear pink and purple but anything else girly? She says, with full-on teenage attituge, “Uh, no way.” Let me remind you that she just turned 4 in March. She sure knows what she wants when she wants it. Jeez. I wonder where she gets that from?
So yeah a leotard. She was invited to join the advanced pre-k gymnastics class. This was a really big deal as it’s a much more challenging class than the one she was in before. My really good friend is one of the coaches and last weekend was trying to break it to her that all of the girls wear leotards/gymnastics outfits. Of course Supergirl could care less and replied, “No way! Not me!” I decided I was going to win this damn battle. I’m older, smarter and have more money than her. What’s a mama to do in a situation like this? BRIBERY! She loves anything camo. Pink or purple camo is even better. I found a pair of gauchos like this at Target and knew she’d do anything for them.
Like wear a pink leotard, anything. Uh huh. Oh yeah. Okay yes she has shorts on too but they matched and had sparkles and she, as Tim Gunn would say, “made it work.”

And she has the attitude to go with it doesn’t she? That’s my sassy Supergirl for you. She actually really liked wearing it and told me, “And I wasn’t even embarrassed!” See?

So that’s my Parenting 101 advice for the day. If you don’t want to argue with your kids you can always bribe them to do what you want! We all know Target can solve all parenting problems. Especially if pink-camo gauchos are involved.
**She changed into her cargo shorts, past the knees, and her t-shirt as soon as we walked in the door. I still won though….**

Nothing wrong with a little well-timed bribery.
I’d say YOU are the one who “made it work”! And as a switch-it-up for you, my 3 yo son loves to wear the Cinderella dress at school and is begging me for the McD’s Polly Pocket doll!! (but he does like the truck, too…)
You gotta savor the victories!
Tarzhay strikes again… a trip to the Bull’s Eye Boutique and 5 bucks and my kid’ll do almost anything. Even get a hair-cut.
Hey, with so many little kids dressing all skanky these days, I LOVE that your girl wants to dress like the guys! Good for her.
I’m all for bribery. She looks so cute, I like her attitude.
uhhhh, Viv has the exact same pants– the camo gauchos. Surprised?? lol
Tell her she looks COOL in her leotard, from me.
Supergirl is ROCKIN that leotard. Just tell her nothing looks stupid if SHE”S wearing it. I just picked up some cute cammo pants for my daughter at Old Navy if you are lookin for more bribery tools.
Now the bad news - we are not coming through ABQ. We decided to bite the bullet and go through Texas - so I won’t get to meet you this time. But I’m pretty sure I’ll be rollin through next year so watch out!
(It’s for the best I guess - if I went to ABQ I would just start house hunting…I miss the desert!).
Yay for Supergirl!
photos like these totally remind me of when I was that age and doing gymnastics…
and as for bribing- abuela thought it was a great way to interact. I hated having my hair done (she called me Phyllis Diller because of this) and so she would give me a starburst if I let her comb it. Worked, and now… I havae one fierce starburst addiction (all her fault
Woo-hoo!! Go SuperGirl! Go Scout! Oh, she’s adorable…
Supergirl is way cute in the leotard. As I’ve said before, she sounds a lot like my Stinkerbelle who also hates all that is girly but loves purple and sparkly. Her new thing - black Vans with flames on them. She insisted on having them since that’s what all the skateboarders wear. I just love little girls with confidence and attitude!
It’s true - there’s a quote from Project Runway for every major life event!
Look at that girl workin’ the camera!
Oh that is so funny. I love small ones and their die hard I am always right fashion sense
Oh I so know your pain!!! Good thing you are starting early to um..work out
Mine was 2 when I heard
certain things…however way you can do it!
the same things!! She’s now 12 yikes!
My 2 year old girl is so girly that it is a pain in the a** sometimes.
Everything has to be pink, red or purple….
If she can choose from two sweaters or pants when she gets dresses in the morning you can be sure that is the most girly one she wants to have on. The very best thing clotheswise is dresses or skirts…. very impratical when she is to bee in kindergarten that day.
