How Can I Stop Biting My Cuticles?

Because my hands are really not prepared for close-ups on TV. Yeah. I said TV. Pretty much the most exciting news ever is that I have been chosen to be a guest on Knitty Gritty. Not one of the Knitsters on the couch. An actual guest like Stephanie, Shobhana, Stefanie, Amy, Drew, Cat, Islea, a whole bunch of other people and me. Li’l ole me. I’m trying really hard not to question it. I still don’t really believe it even though I just booked the flight/hotel/car. I don’t know when it will hit me really. Maybe it won’t until I’m standing there on the set seeing the Knitsters knitting with the yarn I dyed and Vickie introduces me? Oh, did I tell you that I’m taping in just a few weeks? I leave in 3 weeks. What the hell am I going to wear? Oy.

I’m really tired but wanted to share the news with all of you so I’ll talk more about this tomorrow. It’s been hard not posting about it but we were just waiting for network approval. I also wanted to see if any of you have Scout’s Swag all knitted up and might be willing to part with it for a few weeks so I could bring it on the set to show off? I’m envisioning a basket full of socks knit with my swag along with a number of other cool things I have in the works. I’ve already talked with a few of you but I really want a good variety if I can so please let me know if you would like to help.

There are a trillion details I need to work out in the next few days. Sleep is first on my list. Did I mention that I got the Indie Swag all out in the mail today? (at 7:00am nonetheless) I’m afraid to think about how I’m going to get the next month done with all of this going on. I know I can do it, but still. Anyone know how to clone a person? Maybe that’s the ticket. Oh, hello. It’s 8:14pm and I haven’t eaten dinner yet. Maybe I should go and do that. More tomorrow.

Congratulations! That will be for the 2007
season, right? I’m sure it will be a ton o’ fun for
you and us viewers! Are you knitting something
or dyeing your yarn? Have the knitster’s been
    chosen yet? I’m a hop-skip-jump, 2 hours away
    from L.A.!!
Wish I could help you out with knitted swag,
alas, I’ve only knit half a sock of the first swag
I got from you. Ok. I admit it. I’m really just a
    yarn collector…

I love Aveda’s cuticle cream. It comes in a small tube, and you just put a drop on each finger a couple of times a day and rub it in.

Wish I could help you with the cuticle issue as well as the swag socks. I’m only on my first sock and awaiting help from mom when I see her Thursday to finish it (and I was doing so well, dang picking up of stitches!). You’ll do fine no matter though.

P.S. I’m so going to be stalking my mail carrier!!!! SWAG’S COMIN’! *giddy smile*

As for the cuticles, I’ve got that same habit.
I swear by Burt’s Bees cuticle cream to keep them from getting dried out and wanting to bite them.

Can’t wait to see you on TV! So excited for you.

Congrats! Can’t wait to see the episode.

As far as the cuticles, you could try putting pepper oil on them. The kind that really burns if you get it on your tongue. I know people who have done this to break the habit of bitting their nails…? Just a thought.

    Woo hoo! Congratulations!

My best advice for the hands is a really non-sexy one, but it totally works. Get a pair of plain white gloves (or hell, even socks can work for this, as long as you can keep them on) and before you go to bed, lotion up, put on gloves/socks, go to sleep. If you do this a few nights in a row, that will go a long way to getting those hands in supermodel shape.

I chewed my cuticles for, um, about 40 years. Which was when I finally realised the main problem is that I have dry skin. When the cuticles dry out (which is almost all the time given all the things I do with my hands), they split a bit, which niggles, so I try to bite off the niggling bits. First, you have to stop them drying out. Get a really good hand butter, one of the solid wax&oil things like Rocky Mountain Hand Butter. USE IT. During the day rub it well into your cuticles, frequently, and use the overnight gloves thing, too. It seems (to me) horribly girly, but start getting good manicures because the cuticles are thickened by all the scarring and they’ll carry on cracking open for some time. Then, as a reminder until you break the habit: use the foulest anti-thumbsucking/nailbiting liquid you can find. I quite like the ones full of chilli, but Bitrex works. Good luck!

Next you’ll be hosting your own show!

I would suggest chewing gum if it’s an oral thing, or if it is a hand thing, get a good cuticle oil (or just olive oil or vitamin E oil, frankly), a deep moisturizer, and some cotton gloves. It sounds so cheesy, but it really does work - I am barefoot suzie ALL YEAR LONG and my feet can get pretty dry, but I’ve been religious lately about the foot cream & socks before bed (along with a little massage & reflexology) and it has made all the difference in the world.

Give yourself a week of that, and then get a manicure the following 2 weeks before you go! They can keep your nails super short but just clean everything up & if you can maintain with oil & moisturizer in between, your hands will be looking fabulous in no time!!!!

Hey, congrats! Embarrassingly, I still chew my cuticles, although not as badly as I used to. Aloe is really vile-tasting stuff, and also good for the skin if all those commercials are to be believed, so you might try that. (Break a leaf open and squeeze the goo inside directly onto your skin. I have a plant in my kitchen, luckily they actually prefer it when you forget to water them for several months, and I use it for burns. It probably grows wild where you are.)

Congrats Scout, your yarn rocks and everyone should know.

But have you been reading the Harlot’s blog? Those Knitty Gritty folks have a funny way of showing their love. Please for your own sanity (and the safety of your SuperKids) call the producer and make sure they don’t want anything strange from you…..like a dozen socks, in various stages of production, all knitted with the same yarn, and on wooden needles (’cause the metal ones are noisy). Make sure they don’t want two dozen ’specially dyed skeins of yarn, two days before the show. I believe in preparedness - that’s why I plan the company Holiday party four months in advance!!

Oh and best thing I can suggest. get a manicure done now… and sleep with gloves and lotion on. Softer the skin is the less I tend to want to bite or cut the hell out of my cuticles (oh and yeah I TOTALLY do that and pluck hairs like crazy when I am that wee bit stressed :)
