**Bloglines can bite me. It is refusing to update this post so who knows when some of you will even see it. Maybe we’ll get another foot of snow by then**
It’s still snowing and we have been outside all day. The kids decided they liked the snow today and I actually got some snowshoeing in so I guess I didn’t mind it so much either. For a little bit at least….. After two days of no naps, Supergirl is exhausted and taking a nap. Time for me to finish up this scarf. The middle picture is what I’ll be doing for the rest of the afternoon unless I go back out to snowshoe again. Click to see the pictures up close. T. made the kids the coolest snow fort with three different ways to get in.
My handknit hat kept me so warm. The hat I have on is an example of what I grew up knitting my whole life as a ski racer. Lopi, Lopi, Lopi. I’ve said before that I didn’t realize that colorwork and dpn’s were hard to do because that was all I knew how to do. I mean, I don’t think I even knit anything else other than ski hats until I was in college. I also didn’t know until I was in my 20’s that there was a whole world of yarn other than Lopi! Here’s a close-up of the hat. Did anyone also notice my warm and toasty toes? These are the beautiful socks I received in Sockapaloooza from Lucia. They fit me perfectly and I love them so much.
Alrighty. Time to knit. Will y’all do me a favor? Answer this for me please? What is your personal, preferred length for scarves? (In inches please) I am at 50″ on this scarf and don’t know how long I want to make it. I already had to get two more skeins of the Silk Garden, so I could make it pretty long if I want to. I still have a lot left. I’ll go with an average from your comments. I usually like long, skinny scarves but with a handknit like this I think I want it shorter. Let me know what you think.

Wow…I can’t believe you’re getting so much snow! It’s been in the upper 50s here in Baltimore this week, sunny and beautiful. I think we have your weather and vice versa.
I usually knit until the pattern bores me…so I have made lots of short scarves! I usually try for waist length or longer though, so I can wrap it around my neck at least once.
I knit the same scarf for my niece (42″…she’s only 5) and one for my husband (his was 62″). But if I were knitting a scarf for myself…probably somewhere around 60″ or so). Diggin’ all of the snow pictures…I feel like a voyeur living here in FL! Happy New Year!
I generally like a 6-foot scarf… but winters here are normally pretty cold, so it’s nice to have a scarf I can wrap around my head and/or neck several times. I’d also consider the fiber content of the scarf — I made Miss B one of those dreadful eyelash things (no more eyelash! ever! trend finally dying! thank heaven! but she does love it) that started out not more than 5 feet long and grew quite a bit, so if working with that yarn again (in hell!) I’d make it shorter. Alpaca is another one that will grow on you. I think the skinnier the scarf, the shorter I would make it, as a skinny scarf will take less length to wrap around since it doesn’t get hung up on itself, so to speak.
I love that hat! And the socks are nice too.
I’m thinking around 60″. I usually stop when I feel the inclination. Hmmm… Smaller for the daughter, longer for the husband.
I cannot believe this snow! It is crazy-white outside. The daughter finally came in when her fingertips started hurting…
I like a scarf to be as long as I am tall. 64″ does the trick for me.
I like about 60 inches. That way I can steal my dh’s scarves too.
I usually make my scarves as long as I am tall–so 64″. That gives me lots of length forwrapping around my neck. I do tend to make my wide scarves a little shorter though. I think you should go for length, because it is turning out to be gorgeous!
Very cool knits! Glad the kiddos are enjoying the snow - mine are as well, though someone just tossed the youngest into a snowdrift, and she’s got icy, teary, snot running down her face now… oh, joy.
I tend to like my scarves long, and have read that a good scarf length is the same as the wearer’s height. That said, I prefer my skinnier scarves to be a bit shorter, perhaps height minus 8-12 inches? Also, what will happen when you block it? I knit a 60 inch scarf once that stretched to 85″ once it got wet… (it became two, in case you’re wondering.)
Good luck with it!
I read where most folks make them as tall as the recipient, but then I see some who like the 60″ length. Seems to be a magic number. I just make them for Red Scarf or northern gifting. It’s still in the 80s here, so I’ll not get one this year;) All that snow there is so freaky! But at least the kids get to experience it without an expensive vacation!;) A Very Happy New Year to you all!
Oh, you already HAVE snowshoes.
Gorgeous scarf! Um, long enough to fold in half and run the ends thru the 1/2 loop and still have enough scarf to reach my waist…
I completed the same scarf about two weeks ago. I’m 5′10” and my scarf is a little taller than me - probably 6 feet or so. I love a long scarf that I can wrap around and still have long tails. I had to buy two more balls of Noro to finish mine too!!
I’ve been so jealous looking at your snowy pictures; I live in Maine where we usually have lots of it by now… and we finally got some of the white stuff today. Yay!!
I think I’m in the 60″ camp too. And that looks like an awesome snow fort!
I just realized I made my Red Scarf 8 inches too short-damm!
I make mine 60″ as long as the yarn holds out, but if your a granddaughter it’s shorter
of course. I think I just jumped into the Al Gore camp, in MICHIGAN
continued: In MICHIGAN we get the snow your getting, and your in New Mexico….
we have temp’s coming in the 40’s all week and I wore just a jacket to run to the store
yesterday. But I’m glad to see the kiddo’s are havin a ball in it…but it’s sure to wear
on you. Love those socks… and the scarf is beautiful too, along with the hat.
Have Fun!
You guys really look like you’re enjoying the snow. I have a feeling you’ll be moving back East soon.
first off, YOUR STEALING MY SNOW!!!! GIVE IT BACK
Its been pathetic over here!
as for the scarf I don’t know how many inches it is but I like to wrap it round my neck once and then let it hang down on each side.
I love this scarf you are knitting and so happy to see you knitting
even if it took a big snow storm to get you to.LOL 56″ short scarf &
83″ long for my long ones.
Really dig your hat!
I go for 72″ usually but if you’re looking to go shorter, 60″ sounds good to me. And you can ship that snow to Minnesota anytime. We’re getting desperate for some.
You keep getting our snow! It’s amazing. Enjoy it while you can…it will all be
a memory soon enough.
Your snow looks like so much fun! All we have here is rain and guuush. Yuck.
I like my scarves as long as the recipient is tall — works for everyone.
Happy New Yeah, dahlink.
I’m in the 60″ to 72″ camp, depending on whether it’s an indoor or outdoor scarf. The one you’re knitting looks like it wants to be 72″.
Long scarfs for sure.
But enough about the snow already! I live in Canada and we have about a quarter of an inch! CANADA! New Brunswick to be exact and NO SNOW! It just got cold last week. I am jealous of your snow. And insanely jealous that your kids can go OUTSIDE and play in the snow. They look like they are having such a good time. If you wouldn’t mind sending a bit up here to the great green north, I would be much obliged.
I think 72″ is usually good for any height - enough to wrap around and still have some nice long tails hanging! But it gets tiresome after about 40″…:)
LONG. 60 inches is a minimum — I prefer 72. I do find that most of mine grow in the blocking and wearing, though, so if you can’t stand to knit another inch after 62, you’d probably be okay….but you are tall, so I’d say go for the length.
You were a ski racer and yet you don’t like the snow? Crazy!
It looks like you all are having a fun time with the snow now - great pictures!
As for a scarf, I tend to follow the “scarf length = my height” rule.
I find that makes for a good length to wrap well & stay warm.
Stay warm and happy New Year!!!
re: scarf length, I like between 72 & 80 inches…
I can’t believe you are STILL getting snow! We’ve been sunny and in the clear for over 24 hrs now! (Sorry, didn’t mean to rub it in!)
I think 60 inches for the scarf is good. It’s looking great!
I ususally make my scarves around 60″ to 65″. I can’t get over how much snow you guys are getting!
I think that 60″ is the standard for a nice long scarf. The Yarn Harlot said in her last book that a good standard for a scarf is whatever the height of the person is. That’s why they are longer for men, in general, than they are for women.
I am so jealous of that snow!I am sitting over here close to Amarillo waiting for the snow and Albuquerque keeps stealing it from us!Ice we freaking get damnable ice.I want snow!Okay enough ranting(not your fault).I think 60 inches is perfect for a scarf.Looks good so far.
The longer the better. I like to wrap it around a couple of times and still have enough scarf to dangle down on either side. That doesn’t help, does it?
Uhm…can you send some of your snow my way. I’m really going through withdrawl. It’s 50 degrees and gloomy here.
Is it still snowing? Ya’ll are just so cute.
I like long skinny scarves right now. Something that I can wrap around several times and still look like I have a neck. :p The last one I made was over six feet long, but I’m short and weird and shit.
I make ‘em my own height, as well, unless it’s for someone taller & then I add a few more inches.
Hmmmm…so that’s where the snow that is normally in the East Coast this time of year is!! I was wondering, because we’ve been walking around here with fleece jackets on (instead of our coats) - the temperatures have been anywhere from the high 40’s to the high 60’s (I live in PA, by the way). Interesting.
