I Made It

It was touch and go for a while there……just kidding. I only felt like throwing up for the first 25 minutes of the show and once the crazy shaking and adrenaline wore off I was able to actually watch the last 5 minutes of the show without feeling sick. It’s just weird to see yourself on TV. Even Vickie told me last night she felt sick watching herself for the first 20 or so shows. At least my Master’s in Education and seven years of teaching paid off. I kind of sounded like I knew what I was talking about! Anyway, I’m glad it’s over. I appreciate all of the words of encouragement yesterday. It made me feel a lot better. Even Vickie gave me props on her blog. Thank YOU!

I have had a number of emails about where to find Scout’s Ghetto Warping Board instructions as DIY didn’t get it up on the website yet. I made a new page for it here with the warping instructions at the bottom. People have also been asking for the pattern of the head wrap I was wearing seen below.

head wrap

This is a free pattern from the talented Wendy of Knit & Tonic. It’s called the Dream Scarf Head Wrap and you can find the pdf file here. I would like to publically thank the knitters again who helped me with all of the swag for the show. Molly knit the headwrap and Cookie knit two of the socks seen on the show. I actually made the one with the stripes from the warping board. There are many others who knit for the show so a big thank you again to all of you. There is no way I would have been able to do it all myself.

I got some screen shots from the show to share that are up in my Knitty Gritty Flickr Set. Here are just a few of my favorites. If you’ve seen the show already, you can just ignore the rest of the post. Hey look! I’m on the Knitty Cam! No mangled cuticles!

cam

And yes folks, I not only showed how to dye yarn and reskein it, I also did a bit of knitting too. I don’t recall Vickie referring to the belt buckle as a bit of *razzle dazzle* but again, I don’t remember saying “handy dandy” either. I think an alien replaced me for a few minutes because I don’t think I’ve ever said that before in my entire 37 years on this planet. Here’s Vickie showing off the razzle dazzle.

razzle

And these two pictures are from my favorite part of the show. They really wanted me to show you how to put the yarn into a skein with my foot but I was worried that might scare some people off so I told her to just give me her finger. Ha! We thought this was so funny. Hey, it was late. It didn’t take much.

finger finger
See to me, reskeining yarn is the most tedious part of this job. T. ends up doing most of it for me. So the fact that they wanted me to show how to do all of that on my show completely cracked me up. But the director thought it was the coolest thing. When I was practicing the day before the shoot, the awesome art director Dave, asked the director to come out and check out the swift and skein winder and wondered if we could show it on my show. When he saw how it reskeined the yarn he exclaimed, “I’ve always wanted to know how that worked!” And in the show it went. I guess I forget a lot of people have never seen how that all works so it was actually a good idea to put it in. But it still makes me giggle watching Vickie winding that skein winder. Finally, here I am on the couch with my Knitsters. When I was sitting there I couldn’t believe it was about to be all over. The actual taping went so quickly. The total time was about 2.5 hours but it flew by.

knitsters

And that’s it folks. I’m thinking it might re-air in a few weeks. The one that aired last Monday has a re-air date 16 days later. I’ll let you know if I hear anything. Time to get to the emails. I have been gone most of the day and I need to play catch-up. Ot take a nap? Thursday is Shobhana! Friday is John! YAY! I can’t wait to see their shows.

I just watched the show (I DVRed it) and it was great! I loved the handy dandy and the razzle dazzle. I saved it so I can refer back to it when I finally get around to using the big girl dyes I bought almost a year ago.

and dye some yarn. And it will be YOUR FAULT. (this is what I will tell DH).
You are totally famous. So. Cool.
Good Job. When are you going to do it again?

You were very good! Some of the guests on Knitty Gritty seem kind of 2 dimensional, but you were articulate, to the point and entertaining!
Now I’m going to *have* to dye some of my own yarn and make a head wrap out of it;) Thanks!

Admit it, you were awesome! You are the whole reason I started dyeing in the first place, I started with the Dye-o-rama last year. You didn’t seem nervous at all. I was glug, glugging in my kitchen this morning with the kids and some kool-aid dyeing gone somewhat bad. Back to the acid dyes! Again, you rock. Thanks for making it all look so easy!

I luved your show Scout! I was so inspired that I immediately broke out the easter egg dyes and tried to dye me some yarn. Now everytime I wrap my skeins in plastic wrap, I’ll think of a burrito.

I think there’s one of your ghetto warping boards in my future! I do have a question…am I seeing correctly that when you’re wrapping from top to bottom that you are skipping two of the pairs of pins? And crossing the yarn on the pairs that you do go around? How come?

I haven’t done any projects from that book yet, as I hadn’t really got it into my head on how to manage such a large skein. Now that I do, I want to order up some nice sock-weight and dye away!

    38

    So…the real question is…

How did you manage to go the whole time without cussin’ a blue streak!? :)

And I’m so bummed I live in bumblef*ck backwoods. We don’t even *get* cable here, much less DIY. Know of anywhere I could get me a copy on DVD?

You did a great job, really knowledgeable and you looked great too! It really makes me want to give dyeing a try! Do you also have instructions for the “handy-dandy” re-skeiner too? And a dumb question, everyone says not to use your dyeing tools for food prep - does that include the microwave?

I found your website by looking for hand-dyeing techniques in blogland. Then I read you were going to be on Knitty Gritty. I had long ago given up on that show. It seemed to be all beginner projects and always the same ideas. In order not to miss you, I started taping the show. I’m really glad I did. You were terrific!
