Eye Candy & a Redo on the Poll

First of all I bring you some images from the brand new school the boy goes to. Next year Supergirl will go as well and let me tell you, I’m totally jealous. I want to be a kid again to be able to go to this school. It’s the most beautiful school I’ve ever seen. Carole can vouch for me. It’s amazing. Next year when both kids are there I will feel les stalkerish and take some more shots. Here are a few from the other day. And yes people. The sky is really that blue. Click to see the better shot.

The biggest picture is what you see at the front entrance as you look up to the right. The bottom right picture is also by the front door. There are these huge concrete balls by the front door that represent the planets and I found out yesterday that this blue one is the earth. You should see the playground! There is a huge one for the big kids and a completely separate one for the kindy kids on a patio/porch type area overlooking the bigger playground. Did I mention the views? The school is located directly west of the Sandia Mountains and south of reservation land where buffaloes live. See? Jealous. Major eye candy my friends.

Let me explain about the redo on the poll I posted yesterday. I would greatly appreciate it if you would vote again. Right now the *as is* is ahead 57% to 43% with almost 300 votes. Since there were so many people who said they really didn’t care which way the skein came to them, I want to redo the poll with the third option. This poll is being looked at by a number of other dyers too so we really want to know what you all want. We have been really surprised by how many of you actually like the *as is* skein!

Let’s Try This Again!
Leave it AS IS. For sure!
Rekein it baby! Absolutely!
Either Way. Seriously. Less work for T.!

Thank you for taking this again. I also though it was so funny how many of you like the completely altered colorway too. I’ll give you a hint, the tissue paper under the yarn is actually a pale green! That’s how different the yarn really is. I’ll show it as soon as most Indie Swag members have seen it. Have a great weekend everyone. My goal is to catch up on the yarn orders so I can start taking them again next week.

While I love the look of it reskeined, seeing the color repeats allows me more freedom to plan the design or pattern I want to use. Your Knitty Gritty was awesome!

What a fun school. It’s nice when we can send our kids off to a great environment!

About the skeins, I don’t mind receiving either kind.

But, I have to say, I do like seeing it unskeined and then reskeined. It gives me a good sense of what colors are used in dying as well as how it will look knit up.

Just because I’m difficult like that. ;-)

the reason I voted to reskein is that I’m still a beginner and it helps me to see the reskeined yarn. Not that I wouldn’t buy it the other way, it just visually helps me get a clue as to what it will look like knitted when it is reskeined.

I like to see it reskeined as it gives me a better view of what the yarn might look like when knitted.

Cool school. My school was pretty boring when I was a kid….still is from what I’ve heard. :)

As a follow up to my “either way” vote…on the one hand I enjoy the way unskeined handpaints look in the skein more, but reskeined yarn does give a better idea of how it will knit up and possible pooling effects. Lorna’s is a good example of someone who doesn’t reskein, and it is gorgeous to look at. But it can be notorious for unexpected pooling. Perhaps a little sample swatch of handpaint “lengths” that you offer (self-stripe, variegated, etc) for an idea of how they look on the store site but then not have to reskein?

So I like to *see* the reskeined yarn, at least in a picture, since that is closer to how it will knit up and my imagination with the unskeined yarn… not so good. That being said, I could care less how the yarn actually arrives at my doorstep. I’m going to wind it into a ball in like a minute anyway, ya dig?

    I re-voted, still the same answer: don’t re-skein.

Funny– while I was sitting out there waiting for the practice lockdown to end, I was noticing those very angles & the shadows cast by those rectangular cutouts in the wall. Great minds!!

One of the reasons that I reskein is that I have trouble with some of the skeins looking messy, like loose threads and such, They seem so much smoother when they are reskeined. Do you have that problem at all?

Having thought about it a bit, when I’m looking at skeins on a website I like to see the colours all jumbled; however the un-re-skeined yarn is what makes me gasp with delight when i open the parcel.

I voted for the reskein (again), but I really wouldn’t mind a skein that wasn’t reskeined as long as I could see a picture of at least one skein of that yarn reskeined. Does this make sense?

The more we talk about it, I’m still for re-skeining. But, I’m also one of those dyers looking to see what folks want.

I actually really like the colors as they appear for the sample skeins! Maybe some day you’ll consider dyeing some yarn to match the colors you “made” with the computer!!

I guess I’ve been indoctrinated by all my STR skeins. I like them as is ’cause then I know how short or long a color length is and canget a good idea if I’ll stripe or pool.

What neat pictures of the school!

I say send as is - although be sure to include pictures of it reskeined so that we can see how the colors meld. :)

I could honestly go either way on the reskeining. I can imagine what yarn
will look like without it being reskeined, especially if I know it’s going to stripe,
but seeing it reskeined can be helpful to show how the colors which may not be together in the out-of-the-pot skein will look once the yarn is knit up. For selling purposes you might reskein a skein
(ha!) for photos, and show a photo of the original next to it (like in your last post), but I would send
the unreskeined versions - the trouble of reskeining seems unnecessary.
The buyer’s ballwinder will take care of mixing up the colors pretty quickly! That said,
when I’ve sent people yarn I’ve dyed, I’ve always reskeined it. Not sure why. It’s possible
that you rubbed off on me!

the as-is is prettier to me (seen a lot of this online), but as someone who is new to the hand-dyed yarns, i wouldn’t have the foggiest how the as-is skein would look knitted up. i was surprised to see your post and realize it was the same yarn in each skein. given the choices listed in your post, i’d have to go with reskeining.

however, if it were truly up to me, i’d have sellers post their as-is picture next to a picture a swatch of that yarn in stockinette. to me, that’s the absolute best way to see how the colors and variations will play out.

I voted to leave as-is, but now that I have read through the comments, I wish that Elise’s suggestion were one of the options. I really like it whn sotres knit up a (big) swatch so that I can see how the colors will blend out of the skein, so would like it if you dyers who are busy selling yarns would consider doing that on your websites… however, seeing the skeins the way they come out of the dyebath is very artsy and inspiring to me.

Still prefer the as is version because it is easier to really see the colors in the skein.

Interesting topic. I prefer the reskeined yarn because like someone above said, it helps smooth out the loose threads and all. On the other hand, reskeining is the least fun part of the whole yarn dyeing/selling experience for me and is one that I dread far more than is necessary.

My particular style is one of non-pooling and very small random bits of color, so the unskeined and the reskeined don’t look that different, but sometimes there are blotches of color that I find distracting in the as-is skein.

I think the as-is look is great for skeins that have larger areas of color.

I’m glad you brought this up!

Again, I voted for “as-is”, but really, either way would be fine. Save yourselves the trouble of reskeining.

Oh, and here’s just a little reminder regarding the Hokie Hope colorway I hope to commission from you. Do you do other weights of yarns besides sock/fingering?

I’m not going to vote because my answer is “both” - seriously, I like it as is (I like the surprise of what I’m going to get when I actually start knitting) but Scout’s Swag has always been re-sekined. It makes me think of you and your product when I see that.

The reason I like the as is skein is because it offers a larger block of interrupted color. Often, I can’t get a good idea about a particular color in a mix if it’s reskeined because each color is an isolated strand instead.

I like the “as is” for planning with the pattern that I will use, and as little less time spent rewinding meands more time for dyeing, right :)?
To make an informed buying decision, it’s nice to be able to see a yarn reskeined, just to see how all the colours will play out.
