Scout's Knitted Swag

Are you sitting down?

I do not want this post to cause anyone to faint. Remember back here where I had finished one of T’s fingerless mitts? Well since then? I not only finished his but two more pairs for the kids. That means three pairs of mitts in one month. Not too shabby huh?

They all totally love them and love me for making them. Now I don’t know what to knit next. It was weird last night not having something to knit. Sure I could work on one of my UFOs. I dunno. I need to think about it. Anyway. This pattern is great and I just modified it a bit for the kids. I still cast on the same amount of stitches but just shortened the lengths. I knit 3″ to the thumb instead of 4″ and then just measured the kids hands to see how much farther up I went after working on the thumb. For the boy the total length before casting off was 6″ vs. 8″ and I just made the girl’s a teeny bit smaller. The yarn you see here is just some Bernat camoflauge I had laying around the house from when the kids were knitting a few months ago. I highly recommend this pattern for a super quick and easy knit.

New Colorways & a Sale in the shop!

I decided to have a sale on my favorite little bags in the shop for Valentine’s Day. I absolutely love my Grab Bag and thought I would mark them down 15% until February 14th to spread the love! The Grab Bag comes in Brown and Blue. I use mine every day as my little purse and get compliments on it all of the time.

I have finally updated the yarn gallery page with six new colorways. Actually, Adam did it for me since I can’t figure out Dreamweaver. I would be lost without him. The new additions are - Convergence, Hokies, Lavender Mint, Lederhosen (The Knitters Uncensored colorway), Loops ( for Kirsten’s sock pattern Sigrid) & Power Couples.

Right now I am saying I am out 3-5 weeks on all orders but if the weather cooperates, it could be sooner. If you want yarn, just go to gallery page for all of the details. I am now selling 100% silk in laceweight that is simply gorgeous. But I’m pretty dang caught up which means I can take more orders. I feel like it’s the first time since, oh I dunno, June that I’ve been able to catch my breath!
I wanted to also let you know that soon I will be announcing information about Scout’s Indie Swag Round III. I have some different things in store for this round which even includes customer-colorway-collaboration! The new round won’t start until April but the sign-ups will be in March. In a few weeks I will let you know all of the details. So if you have been waiting to hear about the next round it’s coming up! I will also be making the size a bit bigger too. I hate not letting everyone in who wants to take part.

YARNplay at Home Interview!

I was lucky enough to be able to interview Shobhana again to help promote her newest book YARNplay at Home. For those of you who are looking for ways to be able to add really cool knitted accessories to your home, this is definitely the book for you.

Let’s talk about cozies! First of all I’m curious to know how you came up with the idea for the French Press Cozy?

When I was compiling the project list for this for this book I asked my blog readers what type of cozy pattern would they most like to see in a book and many of them requested a French press cozy. It’s something that I had been thinking about designing for a really long time. There are so many amazing teapot cozies, but I had never seen one for a French press. I think it’s very modern take on the cozy.

Is this how you drink your coffee?

Not really. I’m more of a one cup in the morning drinker. Actually, it’s one bowl. I have my coffee in a Babar latte bowl. I use my cozy to store my French press. It looks great sitting on my kitchen counter. Also, it gives a bit of cushioning in case of a fall!

I dyed the pretty colorway for this pattern in your book; can you tell me how you came up with the idea for it?

I think, at the time, I was using a lot of reds and pinks in the book, so I needed to branch out and chose a different colorway for this. I’ve always loved blues and greens together. This colorway, Blue in Green, reminds me of summertime, green grass, and swimming pools.

If you were to knit this cozy which of your colorways would you choose? Or which of colorways would you suggest to knitters who want to knit this project?

Well everything in my kitchen is black or silver so I would probably go for something that would fit in and look nice and sleek. Really anything with black probably. In terms of recommending it for other people? I would say go with what you like. You could either go for something that blends in or take advantage of this project to make it pop with color on your counter!

What are some of the other cozies in the book?

There’s a CD cover cozy. I came up with this idea a while back when I was broke and needed to come up with a unique and inexpensive birthday present. I love to give mixed CDs to my friends. And I love it when I receive one with a great cover. Since graphic design isn’t really my thing, I decided to knit a cover. I made it with leftover Koigu scraps. It was a bit hit! You want to use a fingering or sport weight yarn for this one.

There’s also a wine bottle sweater (cozy). This was a quirky idea that popped into my head. I think cozies should have a sense of fun. You could make one to dress a bottle of wine that you’re taking to a dinner party or you could use it to decorate an empty wine bottle. This one uses an arrant weight yarn.

Which yarns do you think are best for the cozies?

I suppose it depends upon how you intend to use them. I can’t imagine that mine will need to be washed very often, so I’ve chosen yarns that I love regardless of the care factor.

Do you think that stripy yarn or variegated yarn looks best with the cozy patterns?

Either would work well, it’s just a matter of what turns you on, really.

I love how the Blue in Green came out almost like a swirly pattern! Was it fun to knit with hand-dyed yarn where you didn’t really know how it would turn out?

It was exciting! You custom made this color for me and, I have to tell you, I was stunned at your ability to give me the exact colors that I requested. From the moment that I cast on, I knew that it would be really lovely.

If you could pick one project from your new book to be your most favorite one, what would it be and why?

I’ve already talked about my favorite afghans. of the smaller projects my favorites are the Ooh La La French Press Cozy and the Chain Maille Curtain.

What do we have to look forward to from you in the future!?

I’m hoping to create some one of kind pillows to sell on Etsy. Stay tuned!

Eye Candy Friday

Let’s start with the Eye Candy shall we? With my Christnukkah money I bought myself the lens I’ve wanted since I got my camera. I’m in love. This is a super wide angle lens and look what it can do.

So you’ll be seeing some pretty cool sunset shots with this baby.

Next week I am taking part in the blog tour for the new YarnPlay at Home book by Lisa Shobhana Mason. Check out the other blogs to see where else she’ll be touring! There is also a KAL here if you are looking for one.

I’ve also been asked by my friends Heide and Christy to direct you to their blogs to check out two very important posts. Heidi is currently sponsoring a drive/contest to collect handmade prosthesis breasts for a friend of hers with breast cancer. Please follow this link for more information and spread the word. Christy is changing it up this year and instead of running the Hurricane Sock Party this year she is asking everyone to help donate money to Make it Right. Go read more here.

The shop is also updated with a bunch of new stuff. I also got in the cute pom-pom makers I saw Leslie talk about a while ago. Other swag that’s been updated:

Haiku Grab Bags (I use this now every day as my little purse!)

Kitchener Dogtags

All Clover notions including needlecases & mini-kacha-kachas

Magnets

Yarn Ball Boogie Keychains

And much more! Just take the time to surf around. Martini Sockblockers are on their way too.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Eye Candy……Sunday?

I needed a good laugh and let me tell you, The Traveling Yarn Wig did the job. I had seen Rebecca wearing it a couple of weeks ago and told her she should make it a traveling Flickr group and before we knew it 40 people were on the list to get the wig. After some of her friends got to play with it, I got it first. Am I the biggest dork or WHAT!? Oh wait. Don’t answer that. And the funny thing is that only one person on Flickr got my joke about being arrested for wearing acrylic…..

I’m completely laughing that this is currently #10 in Explore. Of course my totally ridiculous shots are always the ones everyone likes. Click the picture if you want to see the other silliness over at Flickr. I am in a few other groups and this shot worked for those too. There are quite a few knitters on the list already. I can’t wait to see what everyone does with it after me.

On a more somber note, I would like to thank everyone again, who has been thinking about the two missing boys this week. I just read this morning that they have called off searching for them. I just can’t even imagine what the families are going through right now. Some things have happened over the past few days to make them think that possibly foul play was involved so now they are even wondering if the boys are on the mountain. If I hear anything I will let you know. It’s just heartbreaking.

Oh…..I finished T’s fingerless mitts yesterday. I need to get some shots of those to show you. The kids are fighting over them so I need to make them each some too. I guess I will be casting on a few more pairs of those.

please keep these kids in your thoughts

Some of you who live in Colorado may have heard about these missing kids but I wanted to put this out there for everyone else. I don’t normally do things like this but this has me so upset I need to let everyone know about this. Two young Albuquerque men went snowboarding on Friday in Colorado and have been missing since then. We know the mother of Kyle Kerschen. I can’t even imagine being in the position of these families right now. I was hoping when I woke up this morning there would be some news but there wasn’t. As each day goes by it looks worse and worse for these kids especially with more snow on the way. If you have some extra space in your brain or heart to keep these kids in your thoughts I would greatly appreciate it. I truly believe in the power of positive thinking so I’m asking everyone I know to just send a little thought to Colorado today.

I also wanted to thank everyone who wished my boy a Happy Birthday. Things are a bit crazy right now or I would have thanked you each individually.

Happy Birthday Baby!

My big boy turned 9 today. This picture is so funny if you know him because the kid always has a smile on his face and never looks like this. I was cracking up so hard taking this I could barely keep the camera straight. I love this boy more than words. He’s the sweetest, most empathetic kid I know. We get complimented on what a great kid he is all of the time and we couldn’t be more proud of him. Happy Birthday baby. We love you!!

A few of my Flickr friends said this shot reminded them of a certain U2 cover.

I couldn’t resist. He makes a good model!

Eye Candy Friday & A HUGE Thank You

I’ll try not to get too mushy but my eye candy today is this shot I posted

yesterday up on Flickr that has a lot to do with what I want to say.

So many people and their furry friends donated to help cover Phoebe’s vet bills it just warms my heart. I love this community so much it’s crazy. These blogs are so much more than just journals and our knitting ia so much more than just a craft because it brings us all together. I mean look at what we can do when we work together? Isn’t it amazing? I truly thank each and every one of you for donating to this cause. It didn’t even matter if you only donated $5.00 because it really is all about the thought that counts. Keep an eye on Mel’s blog for updates. He told me yesterday that Phoebe had her pelvic fracture set and she was doing great. Now that sure made me happy.

I used the random number generator to pick a person who donated to the cause and the winner is AllyB! You have won a $30.00 gift certificate to Scout’ Swag. You can buy some swag or have a skein of yarn dyed for you. Just check out the gallery and let me know if that’s what you want. I will send that to you right now! Congratulations!

Thank you all again so much for helping out. You all just rock. I know that Mel and Phoebe and Phoebe’s family thank you and your furry ones too. Have a great weekend!

From Mel’s comment below. Do we completely kick butt or what???!!

Phoebe’s mom actually called overnight to talk to me and let me know how much everyone’s support meant to them. They’re hoping to get her home tomorrow, and I will be posting an update. I need to see where numbers are this morning, but totals are handily over $5000 at this point, mostly in donations of $25 or less. I am totally blown away.

Phoebe Update & New Calendars

I want to thank everyone so far who has donated money to Phoebe. Look at her. Is she not the cutest girly???

Go to Mel’s blog to read the latest on sweet Phoebe and her family. And again, in the event that any donations were to exceed Phoebe’s expenses, they would remain in the pet assistance fund for the next case to come along. My contest goes until Friday so keep them coming if you want to try and win some swag.

Here are the calendars for January! As always Cynthia and I love to know which one/s you like so let us know. I guess we didn’t get our act together to make a real calendar. There’s always next year! Just click the image to get the size to download to use as a wallpaper.

happy hizKNITS!

We were asked to do one with the calendar on the other side for a Mac so here you go!
