Can someone please tell me, how in the world, I all of the sudden have a 1st & 4th grader? Huh? Anyone? Bueller?

We go back to school now because they get out in May. June is our hottest month (supposedly) so we get out before then. If you have kids when do they go back? Tell me where you live too. I’m just curious as many of you are just in the middle of your summer vacation.
Also……. anyone else feeling a bit old? I mean really….these kids just seem so big. How has it been a year since this shot? It’s making me all teary right now. I wish my mom could see how damn amazing these two are. As many of you know, my mother passed away over 15 years ago and it’s times like these where I wish I could have her name on that email list of people I just sent this picture to. It doesn’t make me sad very often but for some reason looking at this picture makes me miss her. I need to go for a run and get these tears out of my eyes. Bah!

Tears aren’t bad! Sometimes they are just what you need. Seems to me you are taking notice of the life around you rather than letting it all rush by
They are getting so big, though.
I have a picture of my two boys walking hand in hand (taken from the back) as they walked to the bus stop one morning. I don’t cry any more, because now that they’re older, they won’t stand next to each other!
Yeah, I feel old. We have three more weeks, but we get out later (near the end of June) since it isn’t as hot here (New York state)
Your super kids are growing up to be wonderful young people. This is good. I keep repeating that to myself. Our job is to help them grow. It’s jsut hard to watch it happen so fast.
I do understand what you mean. We’ve been going through it with our 4 (soon to be 5) and 6-year-old (going to 1st grade). I am having #3, and I feel that they are growing so fast. They are so witty and clever. And they are best friends. I have no siblings, and I feel like I missed out on having a friend that is a sibling, as well. It is nice that when the youngest goes to Kinder next year, they will ride on the bus together, and she will show him where to go. Your kids (as well as mine) are very lucky to go through the school years together. Congrats on having a first day of school. Ours isn’t until Sept 3 in Madison, WI.
Amanda goes back next Monday and she will be in HIGH SCHOOL!! I need a drink.
Your son looks similar but your daughter has def. gotten bigger. I can’t get over their eyes! So beautiful!
My girls are going to be 5th and 8th graders this year. We live in NE Ohio and we go back on Aug 25th. Giggles, our older daughter, has been back in school for volleyball since Aug 4th. She will practice everyday and her first game is on the the first day of school. I can’t believe next year will be high school and Junior High!! (Ack! where does the time go?!!)
Your kids eyes are so pretty, their just precious. My daughter just turned 15 this past June, and my son will turn 13 this November. (AHH). Right now I feel like I’m in some crazy time warp, because I’m just amazed at how big they are. I can still remember vividly, when I used to play with my daughter as baby and her crazy spirit she has, and my son, I can still see him stretching like a flat stick the day after he was born, and the crazy laugh he had. Those days are so precious to me, and now where there at now, it’s real strange but satisfying feeling to see what type of little adults they are now.
Enjoy your children, it goes by so fast. Elementary school years are so fun.
My first baby started Middle School yesterday. Middle School!!!!!!!!!!! I feel so old.
Elementary school started last Wednesday. We get out by the end of May as well and we have both fall and spring breaks.
Trust me, what’s worse is those of us who work in the schools! I’m a librarian for a private elementary school and I need to be back for faculty meetings next week. School starts for my high schooler on Aug. 25th and my little ones start on Aug. 28. We’re out the first week of June.
Remember, the kids may be getting older, but WE are not!
Wow, y’all go back early!! I don’t have kiddos, but I know school starts here on Aug 25 this year . . . though apparently it’s not planned with weather in mind — August and the beginning of Sept are the hottest months here. Which brings me to wondering how it can be that June is the hottest just one state away (albeit really big states).
I go back tomorrow and got out May 19. We live in Clay, Alabama.
Here in Oregon, kids don’t start school until after Labor Day (usually the second week of September). And then they get out in early to mid June. My adopted niece is turning 9 this year. I remember when I used to take care of her before she had teeth! Where does the time go??
I’m in the Los Angeles area, and my kids go back on the 21st, which is in no time, really. They get out the first week of June. But my kids are in private school, so it’s ahead of most of the other schools in the region. I have friends who have kids in year round school, which I still haven’t wrapped my head around the schedule.
When I was in high school, we started right now, too, for the sake of having finals before the holidays. Down here they have finals two weeks after the holiday break, which makes absolutely no sense to me…..
How cute are they?!!!! Just adorable… and they look so freshly summerish… now time for school. It goes so quickly, I woke up in May and realised my nephew is 12… Where did the time go… and I want to know when technology is going to catch up and let us turn back time… rewind…
hugs and smiles
My 2 high school girls (yikes, one is a senior) head back to school next Monday but they go to a charter school in Los Angeles so the school dictates the calendar. I teach on LAUSD and I start the Tuesday after Labor Day. But I really think of their start day as the end of summer.
When I was a kid in Texas we went to School the day after Labor Day until the day before Memorial Day. Here in Seattle the poor kids go from late August until mid-June and sometimes more when they have snow days but they also get a mid-winter break and a spring break and seem to have every Friday off from school. I always say that when I went to school, we went but not so much here.
Feeling old? Try having one about to be a college junior (we’re taking her back to school on Thursday this week) and your youngest a junior in high school. We start school a week from tomorrow (8/20), but the next county over starts tomorrow. We’re in southeast Missouri, and we also get out of school in May — usually the scheduled last day is mid-May, but with days off for snow, ice, flooding, and broken water mains, it was just before Memorial Day last year, and would have been later if the governor hadn’t “forgiven” some our missed days.
Wow, they sure look bigger!
*hugs*
By state law (Minn) we can’t start before Labor Day. So 9/2/08 we are back at it! Something about being available for the harvest!!?? They do look a lot older than last year’s picture - still DAMN gorgeous though!
Dude, you have a first and fourth grader approximately the same way I am going off to college this fall. Ack! They are adorable. Supergirl is so badass. =D In a good way.
Geneva Il goes back on Aug. 20th we get out around June 1st.
Bryant goes back on the 21st! I just can’t believe how fast the summer went. Nyah will be starting Pre-K–she is so excited!
About about feeling old–don’t mention it cuz you are going to make me go out for a run (again!).
xoxoxo
We break up in July and the Kids go back at the beginning of September over here (UK). However - this year my youngest (ulp) is waiting for her exam results (Thursday) to find out if she got the grades to go to University - so in 6 weeks time my baby is likely to be leaving home ( and the island) to move to the mainland for at least 4 years - god I feel old….
I live in RI and my dd goes back Sept. 2. Yep - feeling old here too. My little darling will be a teenager in Sept. Yikes - where is the time going???
I can’t believe how much Supergirl looks like you - with blonde hair that is!
They are beautiful children. Enjoy……..
My kids go back to school August 20th and get out for summer aroung May 15th. We live in Missouri.
I seem to remember not starting until the weed of Labor Day when I was in elementary school, and getting out in late May or early June. My oldest started Kindergarten yesterday, and they get out the second week in May, if we don’t have any Oklahoma ice storms.
My mother never met my children either, but I like to think she’s around, watching us, and that she’s proud of me.
We started back yesterday (August 11) here in Tulsa, OK. My son is a sophomore in high school and my daughter leaves next week to be a freshman at the University of Oklahoma…YIKES. I don’t know HOW that is possible!!!
in beaverton the kids start Sept 2nd. We’ll find out the week before who C’s teacher is, M has the same class as he is in a loop. A will have the same teacher the boys had for kindergarten.
I am a bit freaking out that all my babes will be in school this year…A only half days but they’ll all get on the bus at the same time!!
Joycelyn
Yeah, I feel old. Cody will be a junior in high school and Lilly’s starting 4th grade. We start navigating the whole college thing this year. Egads.
School starts the 27th for her, the 28th for him.
My brothers in north Idaho go back next Wenesday (August 21, I think). That’s way earlier than it used to be (at least when I was there). We have the same harvest issue that the lady from Minnesota mentioned, but no law like they have. I think they’re trying to start earlier for sports purposes (my brother has had football practice for a couple of weeks now). We are a very “Friday Night Lights” - ish town. I miss that pretty bad. Tell Supergirl I’m loving her missing front teeth. So cute!
I’m here in Virginia and the kids, who will be 4th and 1st as well, go back Sept 2nd. I’m used to going back mid to late August myself but things are definitely different here. The kids will get out of school mid-June. I still have one at home. How I managed to get a 9, 6 and 2 year old are beyond me right now. I’ll be 35 at the end of the month.
I have a 7 year old and she starts next Wednesday the 20th. She attends a charter school and they start about a week earlier than the other schools. I have a 2 year old as well but she won’t start any kind of preschool till next year. August is our hottest month in Texas. YUCK!
They’re too damn cute! I can’t believe how big they are, too!!
Meet the Teacher was yesterday. 6th graders and freshmen start this week and everyone else next week on the 19th. So we’re just a week behind your schedule here in Boulder County.
Lots of luck to your 1st grader! 4th grade was a lot of fun for my daughter. She’s more than ready for 5th now!
Oh honey - she DOES see them. And she sees you. And she’s incredibly prous of you all!!!
And you DO NOT get to call yourself old. Cause if you’re old - I’m dust for creeps sake!
Well, my oldest heads off to COLLEGE on Friday. Yikes! Talk about feeling old. My daughter, a high school sophomore, starts school on Aug. 18 so our summer vacation is ending in just a few days. Much too early in my opinion!
I’m from Wisconsin and my kids go back the day after Labor Day! Wow, you’re kids have changed so much since I started reading your blog - where does the time go? I’m feeling old too - wow. Tears can be a good thing, tears of celebration for what an awesome mom you were blessed with - even if her time on this earth was not long enough. Take care!
They are precious! I don’t feel old — my grandkid, Aaron, starts first grade and his younger bro is going to be 4. Old? Nah! It’s all in the head…………… hey! I’m getting a Vespa scooter for our 14th anniversary next month! Go Granny Go!
Mine went back today, I agree where does the time go.
They are so beautiful! Our schools usually don’t start until the Tues. after labor day. 3 more weeks… 3 more weeks…
I totally hear you about the mom thing. I’m so very sorry my mom never meet her grandkids. I suppose I can just tell them how great she was. And leave all the parts out where she was a pain!
Your mom is so proud of you. How could she not be? Plus, look at those adorable blue-eyed babies she’s watching over now.
Here in the Seattle area, my kids aren’t starting back until Sept. 2nd. I can’t believe that kids are already starting back to school!
Just wanted to stop in really quickly and give you a hug.
I don’t have any kids (YET bwahahaha tune back in in 2 1/2 months!) but I do have a teacher for a husband! School got out on July 3 (which is why it will be a long, long time before I see July 4th in the States again!) and he goes back September 1 or 2, somewhere in there. Reckon we ought to look into that!
Hey Scout, LTNS. My Girlies go back to school (at their new school) on August 25. We go back at the end of August because August is absolutely our hottest month. We’ve been over 104 more often this month than we have been under it.
Man, those are some gorgeous kids!
Really Scout, pretty soon, you just about swoon at the thought of your kids hitting another school milestone. It eventually gets to the point where the milestones just don’t come fast enough. My oldest is in his last year of college. My middle son is in his last year of high school, and my youngest starts middleschool in two weeks. This time next yearm, I will be waving bye-bye to #2 son off to college (likely out of state). Excited and sad about it……but I like seeing them grow up. Next milestone up…..the youngest learning how to drive! Thankfully I have a few years before I have to confront that.
My kids are back to school in two weeks. I’ve got a first grader now too! Kids grow altogether too fast.
I have a 5th grader and two 3rd graders this year, and yes I feel old now! We go back next Tuesday and get out the first week in June.
The Boulder area schools start Monday, and get out around mid-May. The schedule was changed a couple of years ago with the thought that it would be nice to finish school before the winter break so kids could actually have a break rather than spending the holidays studying for finals. It actually works pretty well.
By the way, your kids are beautiful. You should be a proud mommy!
Punky Pie and Supergirl must be the same age - she starts Gr 1 this year too,
but not for another 3 weeks (Sept 2, Ontario, Canada). She’s a bit nervous,
(but Mom, you don’t get to PLAY in Grade 1!) so here’s some good school
vibes for the Superkids, I hope their first day is super too!
How’s the book going?
We went back last Wed (Aug 6th), talk about really early. We are in Gilbert, AZ. It has been almost 110 degrees since they have been back. Crazy. I pick up my poor boy in the car rider lane and he is beat red every day. My son is jealous of your daughter, he is in 1st grade too and hasn’t lost any teeth yet. One is just slightly loose, but nowhere close to coming out.
My second grader and sixth grader go back on September 4. Hannah’s two front teeth have been loose since the end of last semester — seriously. She really REALLY wants to lose them before school starts. Your kids are ridiculously beatufiul, but you already know that.
Oh my gosh look at those striking eyes! They are both so dang gorgeous! Your little girl
is growing up! As you know my little guy is getting bigger too! He officially starts School
on the 25th –Good God thats just 10 more days!!!!
You know where I live:)
And yes I feel OLD!!!!! Some days more than others:)
Here in the Western suburbs of Chicago, the kids start on the 21st. My first grader is crazy jealous of anybody with lost-tooth-gaps. Her baby teeth are all still firmly planted and she is not happy about it. My preschooler doesn’t start until September.
Don’t worry, she sees them (more often than you do!).
Feeling old, yeah, especially this year. My baby will not be returning to school this September as she graduated from college last May. Not only that, I turned the big 50 in June and the gray is getting more and more noticeable. Sigh.
This is going to sound weird, but I’m really glad you wrote about your mom, and how seeing your kids churned that emotion up. My dad died two years ago, and we just won a really big account at my job, one he would have been blown away by, and he would have been SO proud of me, and I’ve been weepy & depressed all week b/c of it - feeling crazy because I know I’m happy for the win, and excited, and that maybe I’m losing my mind. I finally just accepted it’s a lifelong journey, this grief thing. It sure can surprise me out of unexpected places, though!
And I love the missing teeth. They’re both so cute.
I’m a year-rounder, so our first day back was July 7 (after ending school on June 30). Good times.
Your kiddos are so stinkin’ cute! I would love to have them in my class.
Mine went back on Monday. Summer was much too short. We were out at the end of May. Mine are in 7th, 4th and pre-K, I swear #1 was a baby just a moment ago. My Dad died nearly 17 years ago and sometimes my heart breaks because I know he would have loved my crew so much and been so proud of them.
My kids are 16 and 19. Believe me those school years do go by so fast.
I live in Minnesota. School starts after Labor Day however my daughter runs Cross Country (a fall sport) and is also in her high school’s marching band. Cross Country’s practices started this week at 6:30 AM. Next week marching band practice starts 9 AM to 5 PM from Monday until school starts so my daughter’s summer vacation is ending now.
My father was the sports nut in the family. He ran marathons into his seventies. He died a year ago, after six years of Alzheimer’s. Although my daughter has been in four years of track and this is her fourth season of cross country he never was able to see her compete. I try not to think about it very much.
In North Dakota most are back in grade/middle/high school by the end of next week. There was a little autumn chill on the air this morning but by the end of the day it was up to 80.
My daughter is 15 years old - starting high school in less than a week. I’m going to blink and I’ll be watching her graduate! Hanging on for the ride!
damn your kids are so adorable. and i love the missing front teeth! kids started back to school this past week. i am so glad i don’t have to deal with that yet with my babe.
I’m a little slow to respond, due to the fact that I was crazy busy with the first week of school (I’m an elementary school counselor). This year the 3 counties I’m associated with (live in one, work in another, and boyfriend works in another) all went back to school on August 11th. Teachers had to report on the 6th. There’s talk about going to a modified calendar where we’d start earlier, but would get bigger breaks during the year. I live in middle Tennessee.
Nathan will be starting kindergarten on Sept. 4th. So it will be just me and Nicholas, the 2 yr. old, at home. I still remember the day Nathan was born and now he is going to kindergarten. Plus he also lost his first tooth.
I have three boys and my eldest started grade 12 today (Aug 20) the other two don’t start until
Sept 2. I am in Northern Alberta Canada.
Summer is over far too soon and we don’t end until the end of June….ick.
