Okay! Fine! I’ll do it.

Roughly 1 million people tagged me to do this meme. Just so you know? I don’t normally do them. So don’t take it personally if you tag me and I don’t do one. You’re much better off picking someone more reliable. I’m a bad meme-friend! So here goes. The 7 random facts about me meme.

1. When I was 15 I crashed in a downhill ski race and got part of a tree branch stuck in my leg. I ended up needing stitches inside and on the outside of my left leg and it left my leg pretty ugly looking. It’s been over 20 years and it still looks horrible.

2. I rarely wear shoes with heels. I don’t mean heels as in vertically, I mean around the actual heel. I pretty much live in flip-flops, slip-on sneakers and clogs. See? I just hate shoes. I’m usually holding 25 things in my hands/arms and I don’t need to be bothered by messing with shoes.

3. I have some major OCD tendencies. I mostly have a bedtime ritual and if I don’t do everything in a certain order it just makes me feel…..not right.

4. I weighed 75lbs more than I do right now when I gave birth to Supergirl. Yep. That’s a LOT.

5. One of my grandfather’s closest friends is Julius Erving. (Dr. J.) I’ve met him numerous times and have even played golf with him. He’s so sweet.

6. I don’t drink coffee. I hate the taste of it. I only drink espresso. I add a teeny bit of raw sugar and some silk creamer. Every morning I must have that drink.

7. I am not a picky eater but I absolutely detest raisins, applesauce and coconut. BARF!

And I tag….. not a single person! Do it if you want.

I wanted to let you know that I just got in an order of GoKnit Pouches. I have every single color in stock except medium-red. Otherwise it’s the most stocked I’ve been in months. As you all know, they go really fast. If you don’t have one by now you really should get one. Or two. Or three. Ask anyone! I love keeping my projects in their own bags so I can just grab a bag when I’m going somewhere. They really do rock. Just remember the USPS prices have gone up too. I also found out that I should have the Haiku Bags back in the shop mid-June. I’ve already placed my order and as soon as they get them, they’ll ship them out. You need to surf around the shop as it’s really stocked and there are a few new things in as well!

Okay gang. I will leave you with a picture. Here is Supergirl on her way to school yesterday. It almost fits her. I totally lost it when I said goodbye to the director of the school. Good thing I had on my sunglasses so she couldn’t see the tears in my eyes!

Tattoo-Meme

I have to say I’ve been completely surprised so far by some of the people who have tattoos. I can’t wait to see them all and like reading about the meanings and stories behind body-art. For me, my two little ones are very personal. The first one I got was a year after my mother died. Tomorrow will be the 14th anniversary of her death. After she died, I started to study Feng Shui and it all of the sudden made so much sense to me why I did a lot of the weird things I did with my living space. I just thought it was OCD, but hey, I was just practicing Feng Shui all along and didn’t know it. It was the ch’i character that caught my eye as I poured through books. I loved the beautiful tail on the character and knew that was going to be my first tattoo. I’ve always believed that when we die, we simply become a different form of energy. I believe my mother is around me at all times and this character meant all of that to me and more. I had a neighbor of mine from China help me pick the best example and that’s the one I got. As silly as it sounds, this little tattoo has brought me much strength over the years. When I doubt myself or simply miss my mother, I think about my ch’i and what it means. This is the one on the left.

inkThe one on the right is a fairly popular tattoo which doesn’t bother me in the least. It means mother. Carole and I went together to get this one in memory of our mothers, to honor ourselves as mothers and our friendship. Both of our mother’s died in 1993 and our sons were born in 1999, five hours apart. This one doesn’t really need much explanation does it?

I love both of my tattoos. People are usually pretty surprised to know that I have them. I purposely put them in a place where I can show them if I want. I was a high school teacher at the time I got my first one in a pretty conservative high school. It was funny when I’d tell the kids sometimes that I had one. They wouldn’t believe me sometimes. I have a third one rolling around in my brain that incorporates my kids and their birthdates somehow into the two I already have. I haven’t done it because I can’t decide exactly what I want.

I’ve already seen a few people posting about theirs and want to see more. Like I said before, even if you don’t have any, just share what you would get. I’ve seen some really cool knitting tattoos too. And I really don’t like it when people say, “Oh I guess I’m not cool because I don’t have one.” It has nothing to do with being cool in my mind. It was just something I wanted to do for myself. So if you don’t have one? Who cares! For those of you that do, flash em baby! Okay, fine. I know some of you have them in spots you won’t show, but you can still talk about it.

Saturday Soccer Sky & Tattoo Meme

It’s that time again for the whole Scout clan to start soccer. Superboy missed his first game due to the play but Supergirl had hers. They haven’t played since October and yet they came back playing even better than the fall. They totally rocked and won their first game. She scored a goal and assisted another. Fun way to start off the season. I liked this Saturday Sky shot.

The hood is up because it was freezing. I have to say that I’m totally jealous of her soccer uniform. It has this cool tribal-like tatoo on the shoulders. I wonder if I can convince my team to get them? Speaking of tattoos. How many of you have a tattoo? I was thinking about this the other day. I think we need to do a tattoo-meme. Flash your tattoos. I’ll get a better picture of mine and post them within the next few days. I have two on my back and have a third one planned. I got both of mine after my mother died. I guess you could say that I did them both with her in mind. What about you? Let’s call this the Craft-Tat Meme. I want to see your tattoos. I know a lot of you have them. Show em off! Even if you don’t have one, how about show what you would get if you ever got one? Leave me a comment or do one of those pingbackthingamajiggies so I can see.

I almost forgot. You have to see the new hoodie we bought for Gus yesterday. Superboy and I were laughing so hard in Target when we found this. We knew we had to buy it. Funniest dog attire EVER. Can you read it? It says Punk Barker. HAA!!! And it looks even funnier on Gus now that he got groomed. This way he doesn’t look like such a weenie. Now he’s all bad-ass when he barks at people at the front gate. Who knew there could be so much fun involved in dressing up a dog?

Grumble, Grumble, Holidays/Kids/Vacation + 6 Weird Things

Oh how I detest this time of year. I’m sorry folks but I really do. My kids are now home for 2.5 weeks. For a mama who is trying to run a business out of her home this does not work very well. It’s only the first day and I’m completely frustrated, already. We are also about to get a huge snowstorm so it’s cold and overcast and I just about froze my fingers and toes off dyeing yarn outside. But I have to! I have 30 of the 35 skeins of Indie Swag done so it’s almost ready to go. That’s stressing me out. Also? I had to send an e-mail to my dad’s wife yesterday telling her how much I basically suck because presents aren’t happening this year. Nope. I can’t make it all work. I told her I would send some in January. They’ll be totally cool with it but still, I feel like such a total loser. I really hate the holidays. The fact that I got our Holiday cards out is a complete miracle and it’s only because both kids sealed and stamped them yesterday. No one is getting ANYTHING from me this year. At least T. and I went out shopping for the kids last week so that’s done. But I’m just so damn cranky about everything right now. So let’s look at something pretty shall we?

My knitsters on the show totally rocked. Blogless Charlene (far right) sent me these pictures yesterday of the pretty tank she made with my hand-dyed yarn for my show called “The Same but Different” tank from The Yarn Girls’ Guide to Beyond the Basics“. This is her gorgeous neice. When the show airs, this is what you will see Charlene hold up.

It’s pretty cool to see garments made with my yarn. I might even have to make this one.

Okay, we are off to meet a bunch of friends to see Charlotte’s Web. I really do not have the time to do this but I promised the kids. Maybe I will be less cranky if I just take a break from everything. I’m also still getting orders out in less than 24 hours if you want things from the shop.

Enough people have tagged me so I’ll do the 6 weird things it if you promise you’ll then leave me alone. Remember I’m cranky!? I’m not tagging anyone either. Do it if you want. Here goes. You sure you want to know these things? I’m a total freak y’all. Really!

1. I hate going to the movie theater. I’ll go see a kids’ movie but hate doing a real, adult movie because other people annoy the crap out of me with their talking/eating/etc. I think we saw Amistad in 1997 and then didn’t see a movie again until Million Dollar Baby. I’m totally serious.

2. Every time I enter numbers into the microwave I need to end in a 4. Like I do all of my yarn for 14:44 or 16:44. I’m completely OCD about certain things and could make all 6 of these things about my OCD weirdness.

3. I brush my teeth in the shower. I take one every night and just figure it makes good use of time to do that. I also floss every night too. I’d rather do it in the shower anyway because I think it’s gross to flick plaque all over the mirror in the bathroom.

4. I have to organize all of the coffee mugs on the shelf in a certain way and I use them in a specifc order. If a guest comes to my house and uses one of my coffee mugs I have to take a deep breath and tell myself no one will die and I can handle it. I’m telling you! I’m a total freak!!!

5. I don’t like chocolate. I mean, I’ll eat it, but I never, ever crave it. I’d much rather eat a chunk of good, extra sharp cheddar cheese.

6. I still have to go in and make sure my kids are breathing before I go to bed every night. I don’t know how weird this is. I’ll actually feel for a pulse if they don’t move when I touch their hair. Last night Supergirl wasn’t moving at all and I couldn’t leave until I really saw her move.

Now you know how weird I really am……freakadelic I tell yah!

A New Meme

I’m sure at some point each of you have talked about what I’m asking you to write about but for my sake will you put it all together into once succinct post? On my run today I was thinking a lot about the things for which I am thankful. I was also thinking about how much has changed in my life over the last year and so much of it is because of all of you out there who endlessly support me. It’s what keeps me going everyday. Of course my family is my priority, but in terms of this business, I love being able to find this cool swag and get it into all of your little hands. Making you happy, in turn, makes me happy. As I thought about these things it led me to think about my mother. momMost of you know that my mother passed away almost 14 years ago from a brain anneurysm. She would have been 46 years old 3 weeks after she died. This picture was actually taken just a few short hours before the anneurysm happened. It’s amazing how quickly your life can change isn’t it?

This got me thinking about how I know all of you because of her. She taught me how to knit when I was eight years old. She had such great taste, loved to shop and showed me how to search and find the *cool* stuff that was out there that many people had never seen. She was the kind of knitter who tackled Vogue Patterns and wore the most stylish, knitted garments you’ve ever seen. It’s because of her that I am where I am right now. Let’s just forget the fact that I have my Master’s Degree and my teaching certificate. (Oh yeah and my real estate license and a few other things) I love what I’m doing and I know she would be really proud of me too. I’m pretty sure that wherever she is she’s wicked jealous of all of my cool swag and only wishes she could be here to buy it all from me. But it’s because of my mother, in a very roundabout way that I am now smack dab in the middle of this whole knitting world. I don’t think that 29 years ago she could have ever imagined I’d be running a little knitting shop online and selling yarn I dyed with my own hands…..

I also truly feel fortunate for all of the friends I have made over the years through my knitting and the internet. You all know that I met my best friend Carole online and in the last few years I’ve also met so many fantastic people through my blog and in the knit-world. With the launch of my shop and the recent addition of the new swag, I’ve met tons of new people too. It’s really amazing. I don’t think a lot of people really understand how it all works but I don’t care. I do believe that everything happens for a reason and each and every one of you have been brought into my life for a purpose. For reals Yo! Alrighty then. Should I stop with the mushy stuff? Okay. /done

Scout’s Meme:
1. How and when did you learn how to knit/crochet? Who taught you?
2. How has this craft impacted your life? (besides financially!)
3. Pick at least one person to talk about who you have met through the knit-world and why you are thankful to have met them. Feel free to get all mushy.
4. Comment and let me know when you post this in your blog so I can read them all.

Because I’m missing my mom, I really want to read about knitting and your lives. Okay? I want to see that knitting is as important to all of you as it is to me and why. Spread the love.

10 Knitterly Things You Don’t Know About Me

1. I have never knit a sweater for myself. The One Skein Wonder is about as close as I’ve ever gotten to making myself a garment. I used Noelle’s handspun and it’s gorgeous.

osw

I started the Ribby Cardi but stopped after knitting the whole back. Maybe one day I’ll pick it back up again….

2. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in learning how to knit socks toe-up. Don’t even go there. Don’t try and convince me why I need to learn. I’m stubborn too? Did you know that?

3. When you are a ski racer growing up in Vermont, you grow up making ski hats doing intarsia and fair isle. I only found out a few years ago that these skills are considered challenging and scary for a lot of people. It just seems funny to me since I was eight years old when I started doing it.

4. It wasn’t until I was about 20 years old that I realized there was a whole world of yarn out there other than Lopi. I honestly thought that Lopi was the only yarn there was. Oh, and angora for intarsia/fair isle accents. I always just thought the world was destined for a lifetime of scratchy foreheads.

5. I also have no interest in making a lace shawl or anything lace for that matter. Ever. I’m just not a lace girl. And Lauren? Give it up sister. Not going to happen. And it’s okay.

6. When I cast on, I do not use a slip knot. It’s how my mom taught me forever ago. I simply hold the yarn over the needle and cast on. Again, when you learn something as a child you think that’s the only way. I didn’t know until about 7 years ago that there were numerous ways of casting on.

7. I like to knit in public so people will leave me alone. Really. Whispering Pine wrote about not KIP because she thinks it’s an instant conversation piece but I feel the total opposite. If I want to be left alone I’ll bring it, keep my eyes on my knitting and throw out the “leave me the hell alone I’m busy” vibe. If you don’t look up, they can’t talk to you…

8. Because I’ve knit for almost 30 years, it really iritates me when people talk about knitting being trendy and popular right now. If I’ve done it for 30 years it’s always been cool. Ha!

9. I have been a yarn snob from day one. My mother was the type of knitter to knit the amazingly beautiful sweaters out of Vogue Knitting Magazine. She wouldn’t substitute yarn due to cost. My mama had some serious taste. So I guess I did know there were other yarns but never really put it together until I was an adult.

10. I’m a figure-outer. (like that word? feel free to borrow it) I either look things up online OR in the books I have in order to figure something out in my knitting rather than go and get help.

Remember the other day when I told everyone to go out and buy this book?

yarnplay

I got my signed copy yesterday from Lisa and holy crap y’all. Go today. Go buy this book. I can honestly say it’s one of the prettiest knitting books I’ve ever seen. And, I could see making almost everything in the book. It actually might get me to make a garment. I even showed T. the men’s sweater and he said, “Yeah, that’s really cool. I’d wear that for sure.” This is from the man who wants me to knit him nothing. I wish I could show you all of the things I want to make. Just trust me. Get the book and you’ll see. We will have them at Village Wools soon so the locals can check it out.

Friday Means….

eyecandy

I bring you the view from my back door. These beautiful trumpet vines were only about 18″ tall one year ago. With the crazy rain this summer they now look like this. It makes me happy every time I walk out my back door. Click to see the bigger picture. And that huge plant in the flower bed? It’s a combination of three different tomato plants that have grown into one gigando plant. And if you think it looks like we live right on top of our neighbors I have to tell you that we are so lucky that none of our surrounding neighbors ever go outside. We love that. This is also where I do all of my dyeing.

One more day to sign up for the Funky Scarf Swap! We are now over 80 people and have some sponsors coming in with some pretty cool offers. It’s really going to be a cool swap.

And finally, Friday means…

cosmos

As a present to you I will share my super-top-secret Cosmo recipe. Don’t tell anyone okay?

Scout’s Kick-Ass Cosmos

6 ounces Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail (trust me and only use this kind!)

4 ounces vodka

1 ounce Rose’s Lime Juice

2 ounces Triple Sec

Pour all ingredients into a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake your booty and shake the shaker. Rim two martini glasses with some sort of sugar rimmer and pour into two glasses.

I promise you it will be the best cosmo you’ve ever had.

UFO Meme. And No. Not that kind of UFO….

I know I live in the land of UFO’s but this is a very serious matter. A finished object aka FO? Haven’t seen one around Chez Scout in a looooong time. I can’t even remember the last thing I finished. Maybe my sockapaloooza socks? Holy crap. That was three months ago. And let me just say that until started working at Village Wools I never had more than one thing on my needles at a time. Or, it was a pretty rare thing. It’s not like I haven’t been doing anything crafty. I mean, let’s not forget the 200+ skeins of yarn I’ve dyed in that time and the numerous things I’ve sewn. I guess I should give myself some credit. But still. I need to knit!

I used to be a monagomous knitter too. Now I feel like such an unfaithful wench. Sorry Shadow Shawl. Sorry Ruffles. Sorry sock. Sorry cute crochet scarf. I promise to finish you all once the weather cools down. I just don’t like to knit in the summer. I think I need to impose some sort of structured knitting time in my life. Like I can’t watch my TV at night without at least one hour of knitting? I can send myself to knitting jail every night. I need something to motivate me to knit so I knew when I saw Wicked Stitches show us the bag she desiged I would wait patiently for the pattern and this would be my summer FO. Isn’t it awesome? I really love it.

bag

I’m also being a good girl and using stash yarn to make it. I have some Filatura de Crosa cotton that was my mamas. I started it last night and couldn’t put it down. I told Ariane last night it’s totally addictive. So I’m going to finish this. Y’all hear me? And I’m going to Stitch ‘n’ Bitch tonight. I haven’t been in forever and I need to be put in knitting jail.

Tell me I’m not the only one? Has anyone else gone three months without a FO? Who has the most UFO’s? (Unfinished Objects for those that don’t know) We should have a contest. I know I only have a few. We need a new meme in knitland. Share your deep dark knitting secrets. Just how many UFO’s do you have? come on. You’ll feel better. Maybe we can start a whole wave of motivation throughout the community by fessing up. Pass it around and post on your blog. It’s a rainy day here if you can believe it and I want to see how unfaithful you all are. You know, to make myself feel better. Okay, I’ll wait, go ahead, go count them. Wait, go into that closet too, and that drawer, and in that trunk, and under the bed……

Wanna Know A Secret - Meme

I think I’m a pretty intelligent person. I used to teach high school English and even have a Master’s degree. But you know what I love? Reality TV. I do! Nothing makes it summer time like Big Brother. I can’t even explain what it is I like about it. I know it’s completely the dumbest show ever but I looooooooooooove it. Not only that? If I have time, I go here and see what’s up because they tell way more on the boards than they show on the actual TV show. And no. I have never paid for the live feeds. But give me Amazing Race, Survivor, The Bachelor, America’s Next Top Model, Top Chef, Project Runway, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance…..I LOVE them all!!

OKay. Did you lose total respect for me? Nevermind. Don’t answer that. It’s my biggest vice. I don’t eat chocolate. I don’t shop like crazy. I just Tivo my craptastic TV and watch it when Supergirl naps (and I’m not dyeing yarn) and it makes this mama happy.

I now tag each and every one of you who reads this to tell a secret that might make your friends/readers lose respect for you. Come on. Play with me. Please? Ready, set, GO! I expect to see some good ones out there. Go post!

Are You Nosy?

I am! Some of you may remember the meme I started last fall where you were supposed to show you knitting/crochet spot. Tons of people did it. If you didn’t? Go do it and let me know. It’s really fun to peek into other people’s houses. So consider yourself tagged if you never did it.

I’m tired. I still have this cold I’ve had for the past week and after going non-stop all morning to get all of my sales out in the mail I decided to park my ass in front of the TV and knit while Supergirl naps. So for those who never saw my spot I decided to post some pictures of it. You know you want to see it right? Plus it’s clean so it’s a perfect time for pictures. Click them to see them better.

spot

And now I must knit. This concludes Scout’s random post of the day. Now go show me your spot. Dave? Get your mind out of the gutter. Not THAT spot. If you did the meme already? Leave me a link in the comments so I can see it again. Ready? Go!
