Merry Christmas

Here’s a little present I saw this morning. Thought I would share it with you.

Isn’t it amazing?

For those who celebrate Christmas I hope you have a wonderful day!

Eggplant Zuma Eye Candy!

This is what some of you have been waiting for…….the limited edition, Namaste Eggplant Zuma is now up for pre-orders. This was the color that won in the Ravelry contest and I am finally allowing people to buy them because we know they will get here by mid January. I ordered 50 and I’m down to only 19 left. If you have been waiting for this bag make sure and grab one before they are all gone. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love purple and I can not wait for this to get here. I don’t care that I already have a Peacock Zuma!

There is a chance they may order more of these bags but as of now this is it. Wendy talked about it on her blog so they have been selling quickly.

Oh, and to update you on T. check out his Christmas present! I paid the deductible for the new hardware in his elbow. Seriously.

Just Curious…..

if you or anyone you know have a significant other who refuses to believe they are as old as they are? Do they hold onto their youth so much that they injure themselves on things such as, like let’s say, a Ripstik? Like are they 41 and bring a Ripstik to work to play on with their coworkers and then fall and break their elbow? You know, like badly enough that they need surgery? Oh did I mention that they might also be something like a Physical Therapist and sort of need to use their hands/arms/ELBOWS? It helps to have the use of your arms when you have to do things like transfering a patient from a wheelchair to their bed. Kind of helps.  I only wish this was a hypothetical situation. Do you see something wrong with this x-ray?

dumbass²

Yeah see that part that is not attached anymore.  That’s his elbow. Or what is left of it.  *sigh* So do you have a story like this? Know any other Peter Pan syndrome types out there? How about we share some stories okay? It would make me feel better and maybe not be so angry with my husband. Maybe one of these days he’ll realize he isn’t 16 anymore. Come on. I know there are some good stories out there. Ready? Go.

(BTW- we see a Dr. first thing on Monday morning and hopefully they will schedule surgery ASAP. He needs a few screws to put that elbow back together. Maybe they can take them out of his head since there are apparently a few loose up there already?)

Eye Candy Friday

Brought to you from my Italy trip in May.

There is no use trying; one can’t believe impossible things

~Alice

I dare say you haven’t had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day.

Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
~Queen

Happy Friday everyone. May you believe in the impossible. Seriously!

back to school….seriously

Can someone please tell me, how in the world, I all of the sudden have a 1st & 4th grader? Huh? Anyone? Bueller?

We go back to school now because they get out in May. June is our hottest month (supposedly) so we get out before then. If you have kids when do they go back? Tell me where you live too. I’m just curious as many of you are just in the middle of your summer vacation.

Also……. anyone else feeling a bit old? I mean really….these kids just seem so big. How has it been a year since this shot?  It’s making me all teary right now. I wish my mom could see how damn amazing these two are. As many of you know, my mother passed away over 15 years ago and it’s times like these where I wish I could have her name on that email list of people I just sent this picture to. It doesn’t make me sad very often but for some reason looking at this picture makes me miss her. I need to go for a run and get these tears out of my eyes. Bah!

So yeah…. I’m writing a book. Seriously.

Pretty wild huh? Now it might make more sense why I’ve been completely swamped. Well, more than normal anyway.  And that trip to NYC a few weeks ago? That was to meet with Melanie Falick, my editor, to go over the book and my deadlines for the next year. We’ve been in talks now for almost two years about this book so it was nice to finally meet her in person. And yeah, almost TWO YEARS! I first contacted her when I found out I was going to be on Knitty Gritty in the fall of 2006 because I had an idea for a book. It wasn’t exactly this book I am writing now but many aspects of what that book would have been will be able to get into this book. Over the past year and a half or so we’ve been shaping the book into what it has now become; a book on dyeing fiber.  There have been lots of outlines, project samples, writing samples, yarn samples all going back and forth between us until we finally hammered out exactly what would work best. I am beyond excited, a lot proud and whole buncha scared! Maybe scared isn’t really the right word but I definitely get surges of feeling overwhelmed by the hugeness of this. I mean hello. Melanie Falick? Me? Working with her? Harry N. Abrams, Inc. :: STC Craft? Have you seen their books?  (below are a few of the new ones)  They are gorgeously done and appeal to this photographer’s eye like no other. To be honest, I still can’t believe I am doing a book with them. But I am.

I’m not sure how many of you know that I used to be a high school English teacher. I have my Masters of the Arts in Teaching too. After Superboy was a year and a half old we moved from Boulder, Co to New Hampshire and I stopped teaching. While there I even got my Real Estate License but never used it because we moved to Albuquerque and before I knew it I started up Scout’s Swag. If you got to listen to the Y KNIT podcast, you heard that I grew up knitting and crafting. To me, this whole thing is truly full circle. My mother who passed away 15 years ago, was a teacher and an amazingly talented knitter. I’m pretty sure she’d be so happy and proud that I’m taking everything I’ve learned over my whole life and pouring it into this book. Not many people get to take something they are so passionate about and make a living out of it. I know how fortunate I am.  I guess hard work does pay off sometimes?  Maybe?  I loved being able to tell my father about the book deal and how he could be happy I was using my college degree again so he could feel better about all of that money he spent on me to go to school. He’s always been really proud of me but this made him extra proud.

Along with the writing of this book, I am really going to make more of an effort to write here too. I miss my blog and think the redesign will help motivate me to come here more. Now that the cooler weather is coming I will be knitting more. I might even go knit with some friends again on a regular basis. Mona? Feel free to cattle prod me to get me to come hang okay? But the new blog will be more suited to what I have going on in my life now. I want a place where I can talk about my photography, work, crafting, writing, kids, cooking, etc. You know, more than just the crafty part. I’ve felt for a long time that if I didn’t have any knitting to share, I had nothing to talk about here. I don’t want that anymore. Cynthia and I have already started working on the redesign and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.

Well I think that covers it all. For now at least. Aslo? I want to thank all of you out there who have supported me over the past years. I couldn’t do this without you, and you and you and YOU! Really.  I hope you know how much I appreciate the love and support you give me on a daily basis. Without you I wouldn’t be where I am right now. My hope is that over the next few years I will get around a lot more and get to meet a lot of you. That’s the plan Stan and I’m sticking to it!I turned my first two chapters in on Monday and this month is Chapter 3. And Sock club. And school starts. And……..yeah.

Baaaaaaaa!!! Scout’s will be in the Rhinebeck Hizzaouse!

(image from the Sheep & Wool website)

Yep. 100% for sure. I just need to buy my plane ticket. But, wanna know why it’s for sure? Because I’m flying into Newark to stay with my dad, then will borrow his car and on my way up to Rhinebeck I’m picking up my girl Amy Singer! We’re going to drive up and back together and sister already got her tickets so it’s an absolute GO! Can I get a woot woot!?!?  We are so Thelma and Louising it minus the cliff jump. We haven’t decided who gets Brad Pitt yet.  :D  I’m so excited, to finally, after all of these years, meet a whole bunch of you. I can’t even begin to wrap my mind around the number of people I will finally get to meet. I’m sure it will be completely overwhelming. I’m not staying in any of the hotels because some good friends of mine live in Bloomington. I can handle a 20 minute drive to save on a hotel room. Amy and I were such total dorks this morning getting all excited about it. The plan is that I’ll/we’ll be up there on Friday all the way through Sunday. She has a book signing on Sunday from 1-2 so we will leave a little bit after that. So who do I get to meet??? Huh!?!?!

And lookie lookie. I need a good name for this little chickadee cowl, designed by the super talented Kirsten, because I started it on the flight to Italy and finished it on the flight to San Fran. last month. It’s been all over the world and back. It’s a really fun and easy pattern and just needs one skein of something chunky. I used a skein of #117 Manos del Uruguay. I can’t wait until it’s actually cool enough to wear it. I wish I could share the story about what happened on the plane to Italy with this but I can’t because I gave that woman my card. Let’s just say I had a very nice woman who took my knitting from me to *show me* how she could knit. And let’s just say I had to rip the whole thing out and start over…..yeah just what we love to do right? Riiiiiiiight.

I also have two one skein of this really pretty yarn for sale. SOLD! I have been playing around with some immersion dyeing and these are a result of that. They range from little bits of white all the way to a gorgeously dark crimson. This is also a one of a kind dealio. I don’t think I wrote down what I did. Or maybe I did? Wait, I could do it again I’m pretty sure. Yeah….that’s the ticket.

For anyone looking for the new Namaste Cali bags I have another order that should be here anyday. I’ll try and get here and announce it when then come in. Okay, all this excitement has me exhausted already and it’s only 9:30am. Any travel agents out there? Who’s really good at getting cheap tickets? I am flying from Albuquerque to Newark. I can’t seem to find anything for less than 417 before taxes and that is just so dang steep! Let me know if you are a good flight getter.

Have a good one my friends!

Oh Hello Blog!!!

Um wow. July 2nd was the last time I posted? Whoops! But I do have a reason. I’ve been to San Fran and NYC in the past month and can’t barely keep up with everything else.  Here’s a little peek into the past few weeks.

1. pre-fireworks, 2. Hip Stitch, 3. Horton are you there?, 4. 34.365, 5. see yah, 6. room with a view, 7. hey you! come jump!, 8. my jawhanny, 9. life is like a taxi, 10. to be matter of fact about the world is to blunder into fantasy–and dull fantasy at that–as the real world is strange and wonderful, 11. butterfly, 12. philosophy, 13. princess in the city, 14. last but not least, 15. 45.365 - so cliché, 16. bryant park

So yeah…..I know I’m always coming here with excuses but I promise I really do have the mother of ALL excuses for you. BUT. You have to wait. For the few loyal readers who stick around and read what I have to say every once in a while you just need to give me another 2 weeks and then I can spill it. Actually, you have to go and listen to the  Yknit podcast to see what’s up with me and why I’m so busy. I promised them the exclusive announcement on the podcast so when that comes out you will find out all the details. *bwahaahaaaaaa! rubs hands together with an eeeevil grin* They said it will be up around August 2nd and it’s episode 12.

And for the few of you who know? ZIP IT! You hear me? But all is well I promise. Just busy. BUSY BUSY BUSY!!!! I am done traveling for a while so hopefully I can get my heiny over here more. I’m really hoping the next time I travel is to Rhinebeck but I don’t know if the fam will be too happy with me going again since I’ve left them twice already this year to go off and play with my friends. Errrr I mean work.  We’ll see. I really want to get out there and meet y’all. You know? My peeps! Who is going this year to Rhinebeck? Let me know…..maybe that will change my mind!

Have a good rest of your weekend. A big MWUAH to everyone.

Honey I’m Home! **Update - The Bags are Up!**

Basilica di San Francesco - Assisi, Italy

Just wanted to say hey before I pass out from jet-lag. Those of you who told me it’s harder coming back weren’t kidding. T. and I both fell asleep watching TV with the kids last night around 7:45pm. I can feel sleep coming on soon. But the trip was amazing although I am overwhelmed with the 2500+ shots I have to go through. Yeah….lots of pictures. It’s hard not to take pictures when around every corner you see something like this:

or this

or this!

Okay so you get the point. I have more in that flickr set if you want to see them. I haven’t had time to process too many of them but it’s a start. We saw so much while we were there. Rome, Florence, Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Orvieto, Narni, Tivoli to name a few. It was a busy 12 days. The kids did great with the babysitter and Supergirl only got upset two days before we were to come home. Otherwise everything was great. I will tell you that it was nice to sleep in my own bed on Sunday night! (and not worry about wood scorpions!!) Oh and I even knit on the plane. That’s a story I will save for the next time. Let’s just say a woman grabbed my knitting to show me how to knit and completely messed it UP!!!

Not much other news to report. I mailed out everything today that was bought while I was gone. I will be restocking the shop and putting up the new Namaste bags within the next few days. Their new swag is seriously cool! I am still not taking yarn orders until after June 1st so I can catch up with life/work/sleep! Some of you know this by now but I’m also traveling to San Francisco in June to teach a dye class at knit one one. It might already be filled. I’m not sure. I am so excited because I get to meet some people who have been my biggest supporters over the past few years. I get to hang out with Stephen and Mike too! So check it out if you live anywhere near the studio and want to learn how I do my thang. Should be a really fun time. (if there are spots left) This is something I might be doing over the next year so stay tuned. I need to go back east this summer and might see if I can fit in a class in NY or NJ while I am there. We’ll see. Put your requests in!

Um. Jet-lag has hit and I can’t remember what else I wanted to talk about. Um. Ummmmmmm. I guess that’s it for now before I fall asleep on the keyboard. Hope to catch up with everyone soon!

****Check out the new Namaste Bags & Accessories! They are seriously cool!***

Happy Birthday Stephen!!

Can everyone wish my good buddy Stephen a Happy Birthday? Come on, let’s all sing to him. After you’re done singing to him you should go listen to his newish podcast- YKNIT - with WonderMike. Have you heard it? Have you seen them on Ravelry? (where they have a contest that ends tomorrow) Well what are you waiting for? I mean on their first podcast they hang out with Debbie StollerEpisode 4 is with Casey & Jess and their most recent Episode 5 is with another favorite knitStar of mine Mel of Cabezalana blog. Yeah, Stephen and Mike are just too cool for skool. I love them both and love having them hang out with me while I dye, even more. I promise you’ll really enjoy the podcast.

Happy Birthday Love!!
